Plein Air painting can have its challenges. I arrived at my friend's yard before the sun came up, quietly crept past sleeping deer and set up my gear. Loons’ Gift
Absolutely the most incredible sound is the call of the loon. Inspired by this favorite bird of mine, while living in Northern Minnesota where I still visit often. I tried to capture the elusive bird in the early morning with its chicks. Loons rarely have this many chicks, but… why not! Watercolor on Arches 12 x 16 inches. Meadowlark Morning
One of the early signs of spring in the Rocky Mountains and that makes its presence know with its bright yellow breast and melodic song. I painted this image of the meadowlark perched on a sagebrush twig. Using brilliant cobalt to capture the typical early morning sky on my daily hikes in the Wasatch Mountains.

Sandhill on the Provo
The VERY first song of spring is the call of the Sandhill Crane as it flies into the Heber Valley to nest for the summer. This watercolor was created by pouring color in controlled washes across the paper along with direct painting. Watercolor on arches, 18 x 12 inches.

Magpie in the Meadow
People seem to really dislike the Magpie. They are loud, sneaky and sometime a bit of a bully. Personally, I love them! I used a pouring method for this watercolor then painted in the details. Because you only see them a the Rocky Mountain West, I wanted to tie in that gorgeous blue sky we have here in the summer. Watercolor on arches 12 x 16 inches.

Bear Head Lake Gold
This plein air painting tries to capture the incredible colors of a fall morning on this gorgeous lake in northern Minnesota. I hit my cold limit that morning as I climbed out of my sleeping bag to find the coffee water was a tad frozen. Original oil on 8 x 10 inch board.
